Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

The role of social media in political engagement has become increasingly prominent, particularly in the context of Nigeria, where mobile phone penetration and internet usage have grown significantly in recent years. Funtua LGA, located in Katsina State, offers an interesting context to study how social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and WhatsApp have been used to engage citizens in the political process. In northern Nigeria, social media has become an essential tool for political parties, activists, and ordinary citizens to discuss political issues, mobilize voters, and influence public opinion.

Political engagement through social media is a relatively new phenomenon in northern Nigeria, where traditional forms of political engagement such as rallies and town hall meetings have been the norm. However, social media provides a platform for young people and previously marginalized groups to engage in politics, express their opinions, and participate in political discourse. This study will investigate how social media has affected political engagement in Funtua LGA, focusing on its role in voter mobilization, political discourse, and activism.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the growing use of social media in political engagement, its impact in northern Nigeria, particularly in Funtua LGA, remains unclear. Although social media provides an opportunity for citizens to engage with political candidates, parties, and issues, there are concerns about the quality of political engagement. Issues such as misinformation, echo chambers, and the digital divide have the potential to undermine the effectiveness of social media in fostering meaningful political participation. The problem lies in understanding how social media influences political engagement in Funtua LGA and whether it contributes to informed decision-making or simply amplifies polarization and political misinformation.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the impact of social media on political engagement in Funtua LGA.

2. To examine the role of social media in influencing political discourse and voter mobilization in Funtua LGA.

3. To explore the challenges and opportunities of using social media for political engagement in northern Nigeria.

1.4 Research Questions

1. How does social media influence political engagement in Funtua LGA?

2. What role does social media play in shaping political discourse and mobilizing voters in Funtua LGA?

3. What challenges and opportunities does social media present for political engagement in Funtua LGA?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

1. Social media has a significant impact on political engagement in Funtua LGA.

2. Social media contributes to the mobilization of voters and the shaping of political discourse in Funtua LGA.

3. Misinformation and the digital divide limit the effectiveness of social media in fostering informed political engagement in Funtua LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant because it explores the growing role of social media in political engagement, particularly in a rural context like Funtua LGA. Understanding the impact of social media on political participation will help political parties, government agencies, and civil society organizations design more effective strategies for engaging citizens in the political process. The findings will also contribute to the broader field of political communication and digital democracy, providing insights into the challenges and opportunities posed by social media in promoting democratic participation.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on Funtua LGA, Katsina State, and examines the role of social media in political engagement during the most recent elections. It does not extend to other regions of northern Nigeria. Limitations include the difficulty in measuring the true impact of social media on voter behavior and the possibility of bias in the selection of social media platforms used by political actors.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

• Social Media: Digital platforms that allow users to create, share, and engage with content, such as Facebook, Twitter, and WhatsApp.

• Political Engagement: Active participation in the political process, including voting, discussing political issues, and supporting political candidates or parties.

• Voter Mobilization: The process of encouraging and organizing voters to participate in elections.
